A Personal Update: Comedy Stages and Dance Floors
Hi 🙂
This newsletter has a more personal note than my regular ones.
My life has changed a lot in the last 2 months. I left my job and went traveling. I’ve been to Singapore and visited Japan, South Korea, and Australia for the first time. During my hiatus I’ve indulged in activities I love but seldom do. This impacts my regular blog writing and newsletters which I expect to resume in the new year!
Stand-up comedy
I have been doing stand-up since 2022. I’ve performed in China, Sweden, and Singapore in front of hundreds of people. I love writing and performing and appreciate the honest and immediate feedback gained from an attentive audience. It’s a tool I frequently use with my teams to help them improve.
Since 3-Oct I have done 13 performances.
2 in Singapore (The Lemon Stand, East Coast Comedy)
5 in Tokyo (The Comedy Bar)
4 in Seoul (Dark de Gary, Mike’s Cabin, The Living Room)
2 in Sydney (The Laugh Inn, The Argyle)
My writing and performance has improved, I’ll do more, and am excited to watch Ismo and Trevor Noah live performances in Sydney this November.
Improv
I started improv in 2018 with my Shenzhen team and particularly enjoy long form, e.g. Harolds, which we practiced and performed religiously in Shenzhen until the Covid outbreak.
I’ve gotten to meet and practice improv in each city I visited above except Sydney. But I’ve only been here for 2 full days so I look forward to remedy that in the next few days.
Dancing
I love salsa, in particular Cuban style, and was blessed with great recommendations for venues in Tokyo, Seoul and Sydney and music and dancers have failed to disappoint. El Cafe Latino in Tokyo and last night’s Pontoon Bar here in Sydney were particular highlights.
A surprise was a K-hip-hop session where I joined 2 Mexican girls for a class where I felt severely outclassed by the speed and movements.
Startups
I love meeting and working with entrepreneurs and have been fortunate to meet inspiring people who share my passion in every country on my trek.
Because of this I’ll pause my blog and newsletter writing temporarily. Thank you for being a subscriber! And if you think I’m missing out on a great experience in Australia - tell me!
If you enyoy reading about sustainability, AI and entrepreneurship I invite you to subscribe to my newsletter. I’ll resume writing early 2025. Normally Every Tuesday and Thursday.
